It's still early morning even though the church bells have ceased. Lost in thought, she hangs sheets then towels, securing each corner with a plastic clip. On this coast you never know when the wind will pick up, scattering pieces of laundry across rooftops. Does she pause to look down, picking out those she knows from all those others? Of course, at this hour it would be mostly locals, Zia or Zio, a childhood schoolmate or two, perhaps even an old crush. The buses and boats have yet to arrive with their loads. Does she admire the view? Or is she flustered by all she must do? I wonder, is there a mother to care for or young nipoti, or both?

This photo was taken from our rooftop apartment we rented for a week last June in Amalfi. It's hard to get a view of the water if you are down in the town of Amalfi. For a view, you must climb the stairs up. Sometimes thousands of stairs up! We wanted to be able to walk easily with the kids and opted for an in-town apartment. This place does not have water views (even though they have posted photos of the water on their listing). It does have a nice roof top balcony with a view of Amalfi's Duomo. It is a wonderful place to sit in the mornings with your caffè e cornetto and again in the evening per un aperitivo.
Also, I signed up for Italian classes, again! I decided as long as I was taking my son to class every week I might as well stay and learn something myself. Wish me luck!

Good luck! It's such a pain, learning this Italian ;)
Her life is hard. Please don't make me give up my dryer! Even though I often hang our clothes, I do it only when the mood strikes me or when I'm feeling green . . . I would HATE to be without it and then have to IRON all that stuff. . .hate, hate, hate it.
She probably owns the gelato shop on the corner charging 7 euro a cone!
I still hang my laundry, even down in our dark dungeon. I just got used to it!! After it dries, I'll admit I do toss it in the dryer for some fluff time! I hate a crunchy towel- ouch!
There should be a clever saying about once you hang out your laundry, you never look back or something...so true!
To Dana, I NEVER iron my stuff after it's hung out; that's what gets *out* all the wrinkles, especially on a crisp day with a breeze...aaaah.... :)
You're right Michelle, there should def. be a saying like that! V. true. I even sent my MIL in San Diego an Italian plastic clothes hanger for Christmas one year after she visited us and raved about the ones we had our balcony. When we visited her last month there it was, in her driveway with dishtowels hanging from it! hah.
Ciao Karen! Ah.... Amalfi! That photo is so atmosphere of this lovely place, and your words are equally beautiful. Bentornata indeed! :-)
I love hanging laundry out in the summer months when the sun is strong and I can easily dry two loads of laundry on one rack per day. This time of year it is decidedly a challenge. My terrace gets little sun this time of year and with the humidity it takes a long time to dry. Usually I don't even bother and just hang it directly inside on the drying rack. Would I rather have a dryer? NO! I didn't dry laundry in the states much, so it was an easy adjustment. But I agree with you about crunchy towels. Hate those! :-)
Your use of textures is wonderful! It can be very addictive! I am having the most wonderful time photographing Sicily and beyond. The opportunities are endless.
Hi Heather, I was wondering how you were liking it. I saw some fantastic shots on your web site. I started a photography class at Glen Echo Park in MD last night.. V. excited!!
