Flashback Friday: At The Watering Hole

How could I have forgotten about one of the fundamental ways of collecting water in Italy? This is a photo (from four years ago) of my husband (right) filling a gallon jug from a wall of spigots. We happened upon this particular spring on our way to Ragusa from Mineo, taking the rural byways from flat farmlands up through the Iblean mountains. There were several cars pulled over, their trunks thrown open as families slowly filled them with the free flowing aqua potabile, drinking water. And yes, I did get a few sly glances when I pulled the camera out!

Many people don't like the taste and the smell of water from the aqueduct in this country, and mineral water is a colossal business (though the WORST tap water I ever (tried) to drink was in Houston Tx). We have a natural spring nearby, and many people from the coast drive up to fill their jugs with free good water.
