Castel Sant'Angelo

I should have known you would know your Italian angels and castels - and views! Spanning the Tiber River is the Ponte Sant'Angelo, a pedestrian bridge leading to Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo- the answer to Tuesday's, Where am I? It is adorned with fantastic angel sculputes.

The castel, commissioned by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family, was not yet completed when he died (year 138) south of Rome, in his villa at Baiae (outside of Naples). Thus his body took a temporary riposo at nearby Puzzouli before being cremated. His ashes were then placed inside the tomb upon its completion the following later.

As Valerie from 2 Baci in a Pinon Tree pointed out, Castel Sant'Angelo offers some amazing city viewing, including Saint Peter's Basilica. One of my favorite Roman memories includes sipping prosecco on the rooftop cafe of the castel while contemplating Puccini's Tosca. After all, it was from this roof that Floria tosses herself to avoid being arrested after murdering Scarpia. Ahhh... It's a splurge not to be missed!

Judging by a comment you left on Dim Sum, Bagels and Crawfish, it sounds like you and I have been in many of the same places at different times, so I thought I'd click over and say hello! Looks like you have a great blog here. Will your move to DC be permanent?

Can you believe I've lived here for three years and have never gone inside myself yet??

I'm going to Rome for the weekend - and I think that this is the time that I finally do it!
